Classic Rock.

Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress - The Hollies
Joy to the World (Jeremiah was a bullfrog) - Three Dog Night
Look What They've Done To My Song - Melanie
House Of The Rising Sun - The Animals
You Don't Mess Around With Jim - Jim Croce
Rebel Rouser - Duane Eddy
In the Year 2525 - Jager & Evans

Then I mix it up a little bit

Toccata & Fugue in D Minor - Vanessa Mae
Foggy Mountain Breakdown - Earl Scruggs
Ghost Riders In The Sky - Vaughn Monroe (The Original)
I'm Moving On - Hank Snow

Then off on a nostalgia trip..

Baby You're No Good - Linda Ronstadt
Abraham, Martin & John - Dion
You Were On My Mind - We Five
Georgy Girl - The Seekers
Elusive Butterfly - Bob Lind

And so on. Folks who have actually seen inside my music cabinet can not understand what keeps it from exploding with all the mixed genres and time periods in there...

You have to be over a certain age or else spend some time listening to one of the classic rock stations. Long Cool Woman has the greatest guitar intro of any song I have EVER heard and the lyrics are a blast (you can find them on the internet).

I can't find the link right now, but there is a web site where you can type in what you THINK you heard in a song and learn the REAL line and also see what other people thought they were saying. For example, I discovered that "Lucy in disguise" was actually "Lucy In The Sky". It's a riot when you see what some people thought their favorite song was saying.

-O. D.-
(Just back from a July 4th neighborhood breakfast. Eggs, pancakes, sausage and GRITS. I provided the grits. Great fun. Games for the kids.)

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, THEN YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM! DUH!!!

One of the lines that I could never figure out of a song was actually in Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress. I never new that they were actually saying, "Just a 5' 9" beautiful tall"

I would have never figured it out if it wasn't for the internet, lol.

Tonight I'm rehearsing songs of the 1940s with a local community chorus for a concert Thursday nite. Tomorrow night I'm participating in a "sing a long" of works by Vivaldi & Faure. Lots of music participation - beats just listenin'. On a sad note: WGBH, Boston Public Radio stopped it's excellent night time jazz programming for more (ugh) talk shows.

I see we have some great musical taste on this forum. ( or just a bunch of old folk? lol )

Toccata & Fugue in D Minor - I am surprised to find someone other than me with this in their library!
Ghost Riders in the sky. I like it so much I spent an evening once just listening to all the different versions on youtube. The Marty Robbins version will always be my favorite, but Spiderbait did a good job for the movie.

I listen to a lot of classic rock, you can pretty much name it from soft to hard to acid. I might toss in a little Borchelli or Sinead O' Conner when I am feeling moody and everyone needs some old country to give it a good mix. Waylon or Willie are a must for a campfire and a western story/ song from Marty ( Streets of Laredo anyone?) or a little Patsy Cline is always welcome. You can never go wrong with accustic guitar either and flamenco is wonderful.

and how about these guys!!! http://youtu.be/9KBgg-hrtyo I love to watch them play.

A few old favorites will always be in my play lists;

Tito & Tarantula-Dark Night and Angry Cockroaches
http://youtu.be/033eVhWr7co
http://youtu.be/oqzR1kvB-RE

Pink Floyd- Great gig in the sky. ( and the Pulse concert was amazing!)
http://youtu.be/Z4nnYO9rvJs

Ram Jam- Black Betty
http://youtu.be/lMLnDuzgkjo

and if you want a nostalgia trip, how about this!! ** rofl!
http://youtu.be/UIVe-rZBcm4

**In all fairness, it was released quite a bit before my time and I didn’t start playing it till about 10 years after it’s release. I remember my cousin playing the drum solo when I was in elementary school.

Toccata & Fugue in D Minor - I love the Vanessa Mae version. In the video version she runs all over the stage while playing it. Amazing talent.

Inna Gadda Da Vida - A timeless classic. The actual lyrics were supposed to be "In The Garden Of Eden", but it was written down during a drunken stupor in a bar on a napkin. Sober, they liked the lyrics and kept the "Inna Gadda Da Vida" version. As a drummer I was in awe of Ron Bushy's solos. He never played the same solo twice and the one you linked to is the best one of ALL! I have the entire 17 minute version on MP3 and also just Ron's drum solo on an MP3. When no one is home and the neighbors are away I crank the stereo up ALL the way and play the entire 17 minutes. Someday the speakers will explode but until then - well, let's just say there's nothing like it. Rock ON!

By the way, did you know that there are over 30 different versions (styles) of Louie, Louie? There was a new radio station in town a few years ago and while they were deciding on a format they just played Louie, Louie around the clock. I have 4 hours of tapes of that. There is even a choral version! You haven't heard Louie, Louie until you've heard it done as a ballad!!! Of course, there is also the country and western version, the flaminco guitar version and the ever popular bagpipe version! ALL with lyrics, of course!

I may have to see if I can find a few of the Louie, Louie versions, sounds like fun.

Agreed, Ron Bushy's solos were amazing! As far as Lyrics, I had always heard that it was because Doug was too drunk to pronounce the words! I still have the album ( remember Vinyl) but no way to play it. Acutally I don't think it would be worth playing, the 70's were not too good to it. I have a MP3 version but just not the same.

Now I am feeling nostalgic... nothing like big block muscle cars and great old classic rock.

OK, The weirdest version of Ghost Riders EVER recorded - and it is a fantastic job.

Dick Dale... invented surf music in the 1950's. Not the '60's as is commonly believed. He was given the title "King of the Surf Guitar" by his fellow surfers with whom he surfed from sun-up to sun-down. He met Leo Fender the guitar and amplifier Guru and Leo asked Dale to play his new creation, the Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar. The minute Dale picked up the guitar, Leo Fender broke into uncontrolled laughter and disbelief, he was watching Dale play a right handed guitar upside down and backwards, Dale was playing a right handed guitar left handed and changing the chords in his head then transposing the chords to his hands to create a sound never heard before.

Dick Dale is left handed and the only guitar Leo had with him was a right handed guitar. That was no problem for Dale!

And the song he was playing? Ghost Riders In The Sky!

Falling skies sounds good, any place to watch it online to catch up?I think TNT aired a Falling Skies marathon from the beginning a week or two ago, but I don't know if they'll do it again. Is there still a free version of Hulu with TV episodes on it?

This drives me crazy. You can't watch any TNT shows unless your cable/satellite subscription includes the TNT channels. INSANE. TNT can not sell it's product independent from Cable or Dish. It's like saying you can NEVER have any popcorn unless you have a season ticket to a major sports franchise or attend a movie theater at least once a week. It's INSANE! How would you feel if you could only buy a given brand of gasoline (say Chevron) if you own a Ford. No Ford, no Chevron gas, no exceptions. Want to fill up your Honda? OK, you can, but ONLY if you come to the gas station with your Honda AND your Ford and show the ownership papers on the Ford to prove that it is yours. Does that make sense? No, then why does the deal with TNT and cable and dish make sense???

And then there's possibly the greatest collection of talent ever on one stage at one time. Roy Orbison in the famous "Black and White" concert. Backing up Roy? Oh, there's Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Elvis Presley's drummer, Elvis Presley's band, with vocal backing by K. D. Land and Bonnie Rait. There are other famous talents on stage also. And, in the audience there are still more celebrities. It was a magical night. How many performers and celebrities can you identify in just this one clip?

Yep, right on! Here's an almost complete listing of the participants.

The special consisted of a performance of many of Orbison's hits at the then Ambassador Hotel's Cocoanut Grove nightclub (Los Angeles) in Los Angeles, filmed on September 30, 1987, approximately fourteen months before his death. Three songs, "Blue Bayou", "Claudette", and "Blue Angel", were filmed but not included in the original broadcast due to time constraints.

Put together by musical director T-Bone Burnett, Orbison was accompanied by a supporting backing band which included many notable musical performers. All were fans who volunteered to participate in the special.[citation needed] Other celebrity admirers of Orbison were in the audience, including Billy Idol, Patrick Swayze, Sandra Bernhard, and Kris Kristofferson. The backing band was the TCB Band, which accompanied Elvis Presley from 1969 until his death in 1977: Glen D. Hardin|Lyle Lovitt on piano, James Burton on lead guitar, Jerry Scheff on bass, and Ronnie Tutt on drums. Male background vocalists, some of whom also joined in on guitar, were Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Lyle Lovett, and Steven Soles. The female background vocalists were k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt. During the end credits, several of the band members are shown talking about how Orbison influenced them.

The song "Oh, Pretty Woman" from this performance, which features dueling guitar solos between Springsteen and Burton, was nominated for a Grammy Award for best live performance. Re-released as part of a CD bearing the same title as the motion picture, the song won the 1991 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

The audio from this special was released as an album by Virgin Records in 1989, titled A Black & White Night Live.

Alright, I'll give it to you. When I think acoustic, however, I envision you don't plug it in to make it work. But, I guess, each pipe really is acoustic on its own. Not sure if you'd see this as a special on VH1 Unplugged, but if so, more power to ya!

There is good music and there is bad music. My bias is that there is more good classical and jazz than pop, and rap and hip hop are not music at all. But, hey - that is just my (educated) :) opinion!

Differing opinions are what makes the world go round!

Yes it takes talent to recite rapid fire "poetry" to a beat - but in my opinion it is FAR FAR from a Beethoven symphony or a John Coltrane quartet recording.

:O)

Expand your horizons - do not be dictated by what is popular - only what is good. You may be surprised.

If Mozart were alive today he would likely be jamming at Birdland in NYC!

I'm not getting into a debate about which genre is better, but just the fact that you can discount certain styles as being music just because you don't care for them. Follow your own advice and "Expand your horizon". Underneath the rapid fire poetry still exist music, melody and beats. I'm sure there are artists talented enough to spit that rapid fire poetry over your Beethoven Symphony or John Coltrane Quartet recording. Is it then no longer considered music?
