View Full Version : New plans that would provide more data for those who don't need unlimited talk

I guess that's that I would be the most interested in, and given what I had seen in the rumors forum, I think this is a missing price / service point that most people are waiting on. The tnt 1200 is pretty decent for the overages that is provides, but there should be something with more data with no unlim talk for them to remain competitive in this segment. I'm mostly thinking of the model on virgin mobile, which has some pretty similar plan at the 45 price point except with unlimited web and txt.

I don't expect that ppc would match that, given that ppc has byod and has apprciably better coverage. But if they can boost the txt to 5000 and web to 500mb, then they should comptet very well there, given that many people would only use that much ever on a monthly basis. Especially that would be very nice to raise the data part , which is still pretty paltry on the tnt1200 compared to most other mvnos.

Does anyone here think that it wpuld be economically feasible for ppc to do a 1200/5000/500 plan for $45, or perhaps a 500/5000/500 plan for $40? I'm not asking people in the know whether it will happen ( they will not tell, I know that much), but whether that pricing structure could work on ppc's pricing and business model.

Any thoughts?

I seriously doubt you will EVER see 500mb for less than $45, or even FOR $45, at this present time.

Data is king, and it's what drives up plan costs now... voice/texts, meh... small beans.

So how about the same amount as the 55 plan then, perhaps something the same minutes / txt as the tnt1200 and 300 mb for 45 USD, would that be economically feasible?

Wifi. Qnc. DUN. Dual nam. Only way to get unlimited data on Verizon mvnos.

That's old thinking. The pre-paid landscape has changed. GoPhone's datapacks, and T-Mobile's $30 plan are both compelling options for data users. Virgin is also aggressively priced. I like Page Plus (and Kitty), but my wife and I will have to jump ship if data remains absurdly expensive. At minimum I need 200mb for $30 bucks. I'm currently in a holding pattern, waiting to see what happens. If things remain unchanged by 2012, we will be forced to switch. We love you guys, but at the end of the day, we're going to do what makes sense for us.

Why? What its magic about 200 @ $30?

There's nothing really magic about it, other than 200MB is what I need, and $30 is the max I'm willing to pay. This is still more expensive than GoPhone, where you can buy 505MB every two months for $30, and is also more expensive than T-Mobile, where you can get unlimited 3G data for $30, so I think it's a reasonable price point.

Neither GoPhone or T-Mobile has the coverage that Page Plus does. Is it really cost effective to purchase something that has so many coverage issues??

We don't want you to leave either!!! :D

Keep in mind that many people are only concerned about coverage where they live and work. Not everyone needs coverage everywhere. I agree that one thing that's totally missing from PP is a plan for those who need more data but far less minutes. If that part of the market is ever addressed by PP, PP will see a whole lot of new subscribers!

I'm in the Dallas area. I've been with GoPhone and Virgin Mobile in the past, and have had no coverage issues. I suspect T-Mobile's coverage is also fine in this area. Maybe the 'coverage' defense applies in less populated areas. Honestly I expect it's half truth, half scare tactic. Of course that's the great thing about pre-paid. Try it, if you don't like it, bail.

It really depends on where you are...but I think its fact that Verizon has the best coverage.

For me in my area, sprint/clearwire and vzw have roughly the same type of coverage, it does matter when going on car trips, but that's kind of marginl issue that only comes up a few times a year. While I do get your point that coverage in some areas can make a difference, I know that in majority of the places that I go to, that will not be a deciding factor.

The main reason that I'm on PPC is because of the current device that I carry, and the fact that I don't really need that much data, since on my uni campus most of the time and do not need copipus amounts of cellular data, although having more would be nice, so that I don't have to turn my wifi connection on and off all the time and burn time and battery. But once I leave the uni, I can definitely see that I will be leaving PPC as well, since ther is really no decent data option (of which I think something in thr 300 -500 range would be the minimum).

Everything you mentioned above is totally inferior to Page Plus. T-Mobile, AT&T, are GSM... and overall, as a whole, totally inferior to the coverage Page Plus provides nationwide, from coast to coast.

Virgin Mobile, CDMA, inferior network - Sprint. Totally inferior. You are comparing apples and oranges. If you want the best network in America, with the best data functionality, that will come at a premium cost, no matter what.

I can tell you Ken, we are seeing WAY more customers coming in, than leaving. Today alone, for example, we lost 2 customers who ported out to other carriers, and we did 14 ports in, and added 39 new AutoPays. Oh, and over 200 new activations.

If you NEED tons of data, cheap, and HAVE GSM coverage, I completely get where you are coming from. Otherwise, you're in the right place.

I definitely agrre with you kitty, that there are areas where vzw network does make a substantial difference. Althoug I also have to say that if PPC was slightly more competitive in terms of their data plans, that it will have a lot more potential customers. I'm not talking about parity in terms of per megabyte cost to gophone, tmo, or metro or virgin, but something that is closer to what the other prepaid would do wonders for customers who want byod and halfway decent data.

That's why I'm not talking about GBs of data, rather somewhere in the 300-500 range would be very nice and sufficient for a majority of customers. I think if they have some decent options for people who do not need unlim talk to have a bit more data, it could really reignite their growth, and bring in many who are on the sidelines wanting better coverage or byod over to their camp.

As I shared, I would probably leave PPC (having just signed on 2 months ago) if I were to leave the uni environment amd have to rely on cellular data more. But if there was something sensible in the 300 -500 MB range (may not be at price parity to the other prepaids) for somethong like $ 10 -$20 on top of the price of tnt1200 , I will almost certainly stay, since that now make sense, and can be made to work with my usage pattern (using wifi at home / work) and rely on cellular data everywhere else. I don't tether, and I don't absolutely need to stream music and such, so a modest plan would work once I leave the university, but not a meagre plan. You see what I'm saying?

If you are on TnT1200, with 100mb, and want 350, you add a $25.00 card, bringing your total cost to $54.95.

If you are on UTNT (need Unlimited Minutes/Messages), and want 300mb, go with the $55.00 plan.

These both work especially well if you can use wifi for part of your monthly data needs.

I do see what you're saying. Verizon has always been the premium carrier - probably always will be. As such, they know they can demand more for their network, their access, their everything. That trickles down to their MVNO's.

Will you see more data with Page Plus, over time? Of course you will. But it will never be the lowest priced provider out there, merely because of the network they ride on.

If Page Plus were to ever see a massive exodus of customers leaving to go to Company XYZ, they would very likely take more aggressive action. I can assure you no massive exodus has occurred, or is currently occurring, in fact, it's quite the opposite. So, from a corporate bottom-line standpoint (I'm just playing devil's advocate here), what is the motivation to give more, for less, if they are seeing phenomenal growth, as is?

Living in Minnesota and traveling extensively to Wisconsin, Iowa, and South Dakota I can tell you there is no other option for me. PP gives me a price and coverage that no one even comes close to. I've checked every other available option and noting can compare for me. I, also, would like more data for my money, but even without it I can't abeat the deal I get from Page Plus.

True, it depends on where people live and how varipus networks perform in terms of their local area, so it would definitely be a diff calculus for people from different locales.

I see what you are saying, kitty; and I agree that it wpuld be right for vzw based mvnos to charge higher for whatever that theyv provide.

On the other hand, its hard to say how much the premium should be, which for me that asking me to pay 10c per MB as compared to other mvnos on top of the small amounts provided by tnt1200 is a bit extreme. I certainly wpuld not expect to get something for nothing, so another plan that costs more but with substantially more data would be fine with me.

I think I would be glad to pay for an extra $10 on top of the current tnt1200 for a total of 300MB, or an extra 400MB for extra $20. A $50 plan that includes 500MB of data would be reasonable for me from an mvno, but a $75 500MB would not be reasonable (which is what I would need to do with the up coming 55 plan), especially since I use very little voice in each month

Data overage on EVERY plan used to $1.20 or $.60 per megabyte. Now it ranges from 10 cents - 99 cents. Page Plus has already given up much of its profit in overage, and they doubled TNT1200 from 50mb to 100mb. If you look at the changes they made over the past year, they really are giving a lot more for the money now, than they used to.

Can you show me another Verizon MVNO that gives you 1200 minutes, 3000 messages, 100mb of data, Bring Your Own Device ability, with 10 cent per meg overage rate? I don't research the market that often, so I don't know if any other Verizon MVNOs exist. I'm not interested in comparing Page Plus to GSM providers, or Sprint providers, because it's not the same. Let's do a Verizon MVNO comparison only and see what we get?

Hey kitty, I think you misunderstood what I was saying, I fully understand that vzw mvnos do charge a premium. I'm not disputing that, I agree with that and think that's perfectly legitimate, as I have said multiple times.

What I am asking though, is how much that premium should be. Many non verizon mvnos have far better rates for data; again I'm not trying to say that PPC should match that in any way sahpe or form; but rather that how much more it should be for some reasonable data plans to be offered for moderate amounts.

For example, virgin has a 1200 min plan (unlim txt) that currently is offering unlim data, but which will really be 2.5 GB once the new cap kicks in. How much more should PPC customers pay for some substantial data plan on a per MB basis. Shpuld ther let's say, be a plan around $50 for the same 1200min (leaving aside txt), for 500MB, which would make the premium on data somewhere between 10 and 25 times of per MB rate of virgin(depending on how much of the payment you assign to the data portion of the plan), to account for a better coverage and byod?

Personally, I don't think that is unreasonable, and would be willing to pay that to use more data. Right now I'm on tnt1200 and use somewhere between 100 to 200 MB, say avg 150MB, so it cost me about 35 per month. But I will be glad to pay 20$ extra and use uptp 500MB. But if I have to pay $75 to use that, I no longer consider it reasonable, or worth it to have it by leaving postpaid. I just want to have an open discussion od what the market value od these types of plans should be for a high quality postpaid like PPC, in no way am I saying that there is no diff between vzw and other networks.

I agree that the other MVNO's, that are not running on Verizon, such as Virgin, PlatinumTel, etc, do offer lower data rates, and lower overage rates. When you have an inferior product (in my opinion), you HAVE to do that to attract customers.

It's completely up to each customer to determine what their "threshold" of tolerance is. Determine your needs, vs your wants, and by all means, you have to do what is right for you.

I personally feel that 10 cents per megabyte is reasonable for data overage on TnT1200. But that's just my own personal opinion. I wish UTnT $44.95 and UTnT $55 would drop to that.

What if Page Plus did $55 for 400mb? or 500mb? How would that make you feel? What about 1gb for $65?

Just throwing out random numbers for discussion?

Thanks kitty.

For me 10 c per MB is not that practical o f a rate, if I weren't living on a college campus that has wifi every 100 steps. So once I leave , I would hav eto use at least 500MB monthly, since everywhere except home and work would not have wifi unlike a uni campus. And paying for $70 would not be woth it for me to be on a prepaid network, and be limited to 500MB.

I think I can justify getting a plan that is $55 for 1200min, 3000txt and 500MB. Its a bit more than id like to pay, but still a much better deal than postpaid, and all o have to do is to watch my data usage slightly once I graduate, and I can save $20 off a postpaid plan for some amount of min with some txt plan and 2GB data.

The $65 plan for 1GB also sounds pretty good. Its more than I want to pay right now, since I have the uni network to rely on most of the time, I doubt I will get anywhere close to 1GB. But once I leave, I would definitely put that on the list for consideration. I wish these plans were 50 and 60, to give a bit more of an advantage over postpaid (since we do pay for our full device price on mvnos), but those are pretty close to what I would want.

Have you messured how much WiFi you actually, very simular to you I have WiFi available to me 90% of the time. My plan renews tonight and my current statistics are 27.61 Mobile data and 1.64GB WiFi that includes 2 days streaming Pandora (I forgot my Ipod) at work and a very large google maps update. I'm not sure you can get the usage you want for the price you are looking for without going to post paid. But if you can limit the need to steam/surf (stick to checking mail and facebook with limited uploads) you can make even 100Mb work. I have found evey WiFi near where I frequent (mall, pizza shop, coffee shop). My son uses more data on my phone than I do, He is on UTNT so 20Mb only sends pictures and not much else, so if we are out and he wants something he grabs my phone.

I guess my point is that even after you leave the University, there are ways to get your fix without using large amounts of data. So keep an open mind. You might also try Droid Stats to track your usage it really is quite eye opening. Somethings use way more data than you would think and others way less.

For me including the wifi usage, it easily goes over 1.5G since I do all my youtube, most of my online surfing, flikr, downloading and updating apps, and other data intentive services over wifi. On the cellular network, I mostly just check email, twitter, facebook, and once in a while read some google news, nothing major. I don't normallu is straming service, which could easily push my overall usage to over 3 g if I did. So. I guess once I leave the uni campus, without constant wifi coverage, it will be pretty much impossible to make work on 100MB; even 300MB will be fairly tough.

Where are the new plans that we've been hearing Kitty tease us with for the past 2-3 months? I don't find "The 55" plan fitting my needs. For myself, I don't care for having that much data. I would like to see something similar to the TnT 1200 but with more minutes. Something along the lines of 2000 mins, 3000 txt, 100MB data in the low $30's, of heck, even same price as TnT 1200. That would be the perfect plan for me. 1200 mins is not enough for me, but then unlimited mins is overkill.

I live in what is considered a rural area. I do not have high speed at home and no access to wifi. So I would love to see something around 500 min, 1500 txt and at least 500 mb data for around $50 per month with overage still 10¢like tnt 1200. It's hard to please everyone we all have very different needs. So far pp and Kitty are doing a stellar job.

Don't fret, I'm sure they r doing the beat that they can, they certainly r not in the business of turning away potential pools of customers. But I guess negotiations with vzw must be pretty tough given how much vzw is trying to clamp down and sanitize their network. Sometimes I wish ppc and other prepaid have a physical stake in the network, but then thir cap ex would go up as well, and we would not be getting quite the prices that we are.

This comment comes as I've only read 2 of the 4 pages but wanted to jot it down before I forgot it. The reason I grew to hate VZ was due to the thought process that has been spoke of so far. We are the best, so we will charge you whatever. The reality is they are not the best everywhere. Also it's understood that if you think your product is better, charge more and see. Lexus thinks they're better than Kia so they charge more. It's up to you to pay it. With that being said, they should at least OFFER the same data plans as the "inferior" carriers and tack on the "premium carrier" charge.
I was on Sprint for the last 11 years and although in the beginning there were dropped calls issues, they allowed you to receive a credit for those. Of course that was misused so they did away with it. They did improve their service along the way though. I can only speak for my 4 lines and the various places we've been over those 11 years, but there was only 1 place where I had no service (for long enough for me to notice). But I had a Windows phone and could "force roam". And I paid a helluva lot less than my buddies did for their VZ service. I just couldn't justify paying an extra $30/month not to drop 3 calls/month. Sorry I'll just call you back while I'm on the way to the mall to spend that saved dough....LOL
Now I've dumped Sprint because I had an older plan and in order to upgrade to a newer smartphone I would have to change to a plan that would have added $60/month to my bill. Just didn't make since. I actually have 1 line on PP and 3 on Virgin at the moment. I like data and don't want to have to remember to toggle it off all the time. I drink to much for that....LOL.
As someone said earlier, there is a pricepoint where it no longer makes sense to be on PP AND have to still remember to toggle off data. With Sprint I could get the ED450 with anytime mobile for $79+tax and truly unlimited data so PP would have to beat that.
Also, I just came back from a road trip to Myrtle Beach and along the way I looked up various sites, checked for directions and downloaded an app for the race we were going to watch with real-time tracking results. Also the condo we stayed in had wifi, but it was just as slow as my Virgin 3G. Wifi is not an option in everyones situation.

You are entirely right. Verizon is not the best coverage *everywhere*, but I think it's very safe to say they, by far, have the best coverage overall. Take Maine for instance, or just about any other most rural state - if you travel outside of a city area, the GSM carriers no longer work. And Sprint, well, Sprint ends up roaming on Verizon anyway.

You cannot compare Sprint to Page Plus. Or T-Mobile to Page Plus. Look at the coverage footprints of Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T, and you'll see how weak they are in comparison to the Verizon footprint. Yes, if you live in major cities, those other carriers very well might work great for you. But if you live in a rural area, or have trouble with GSM or Sprint CDMA coverage in your area, Verizon is, in my professional opinion, the only real top notch fallback.

And that's where Page Plus comes in. Great coverage, lower prices.

Don't worry, there are more options for plans coming - I can't tell you when, or what (yes, I always know a lot more than I ever tell).... just hang in there. Or don't. Yes, I know that sounds cocky. But ... it's truly up to each customer to decide what is right for them - and if this is not the right option, I think everyone would respect the customer's decision to move to a more appropriate service.

But Kitty stays here.

Kitty, I never compared Sprint coverage to Page Plus coverage. I stated that if PP was to offer unlimited data, but not be able to beat the pricepoint of Sprint, then it would not make sense for me not to go back to sprint. I already know that in the DMV area where I spend most of my time, the difference in coverage is negligible so the tie-breaker would be price.

Nobody has the best coverage EVERYWHERE including mighty Verizon and even Tracfone (don't they roam on dozens of carriers including Verizon)? But OVERALL, Verizon is the single best network. As much as people love their phones, coverage is still the number one issue. Without it, the nicest iphone/4G wonder device is essentially a pretty brick.

I'd say phones and plans come after coverage, not necessarily in that order. That's why people in the cities have it easier then their country cousins.

Sounds great, kitty;

Hopefully it will come through, I'm sure it will be a great day for forum members, and I will certainly be a happy camper. A new plan with similar cost to the 55 or the Utnt , but with no unlimited tnt but with more data probably is what a lot of the forum members are looking for. I'm sure it will be great for PPC business as well. Well, if you can pull of an early introduction for some forum members like you did last time with the 55, it will be another feather on your cap.

Thanx, we appreciate all you do for thr forum, members , and for PPC community in general.

You can have my extra thousand minutes and 2000 texts if you'll let me have your 100mbs of data.I did use more voice minutes when my home phone was local only, with long distance 20 cents a minute, now it is all the same so i only use my cell when i'm away from home.

I have access to wifi,i just cant remember my passcode so i have never been able to use it at home, makes me so angry.I am seriously thinking of buying a new one just so i can get another password, then i'll tattoo the code on my forehead. Before anyone says to do it,yes i have downloaded programs that said they could find it,but they lied.

You forgot the password to your router? If so, you should be able to perform a factory reset and reconfigure the device. If it's just the encryption passcode, you should be able to log into your router and either retrieve it, or delete it and configure a new one.

I want 500-500-500 of everything-with the option to double said program,if the need arises, like going on a trip, why not just sell it all in 500 or 1000 size packs, let us choose our own.Bet it would work out great, because it seems to me as if more want talk minutes and texts than data.

That sounds pretty good, except for the paltry amount of text.

Whatever comes out, its going to be exactly suitable for only a small subset of people on ppc, but it will likely be s vast improvement for many customers over the current plans. I think the perfect plan for me would be 500-5000-500, but everyone to his/her own. We shouldn't have too unrealist expectation of what comes out, just that it will be a significant improvement on current plans for many, as an additional option. I think we should all be very happy if that happens.

Of course, it never hurts to have the ever resourceful kitty as our advocate, ;)

I wouldn't mind a 1200-3000-300 plan, but it is looking like I am getting by with the TNT1200.

They have one. It costs $50 per month. (You can use $10 pins to add on data 100 mbs at a time). Of course if you go over on mins or text messages, then you can use some of the $10 pin for that. The best part is, you only have to pay $30 up front.

that's exactly how i handle it tmason! i'm getting my neighbor to sign up and handle it the same way. she is coming off straight talk to a pixi (duh) and has wifi so she potentially saves 25 per month

Sometimes though, I think having a fixed amput of data, set slight above what you would normally use, would be better off. If you have data that is set at a comfortable level slightly above what your normal needs and habits dictate, then the usage will be pretty natural, you wouldn't have to adapt your life too much and watch your mins all the time.

With the pay per MB, the cost after the first alotted 100mb would always make you look over your shoulder when using data. id much rather have a bit more data, say 500MB (perfect for me and probably a lot of people ) set each month; so that we wpuldnt have to be miserly all the time, and miss important emails, IMs, news stories, and have to contantly worry about finding wifi to connect to whenever we walk into a building. Its just not the greatest use of time and energy if an extra 15 or 20 $ would make that entire issue go away.

I would love to put my palm pre back on page plus, but am very tempted by straight talks nokia smartphones at $45 unlimited" coverage with at&t and verizon are no problems....so for an added $15 on straight talk I would get unlimted vs 1,200 min 3000 texts and 250mb of data for the same price? and yes I know unlimited doesn't mean unlimited, but it has to at least mean 1GB of data...otoh, straight talk phones are expensive, and I have a paid for pre+ that I loved...what to do.

definitely PP ~ i know alot of people who have left straight talk because the unlimited isn't true unlimited because the browser sucks (i've been told) and they love that you can byod. as long as you have wifi access you should be fine

Shouldn't need to reset to factory. put 192.168.1.1 into the browser address bar to log into your router usually the user name is admin and password is blank or password. Then under security you should be able to see or change your password for devices to connect.

If 192.168.1.1 doesn't work google the brand name of your router you will find it easily enough.

I am currently on sprint 50 a month unlimited plan and it is good service. I have my fam set up on pageplus, and they like it as well. I just wanted to agree with those who say more data, less minutes. Personally I do not use any texts, since google voice runs on data, and I would never use even 800 minutes in a month. So I think a juicy plan would include just data, or something like a 500-500-500 plan. I do agree also that the prepaid world is changing, and 4G is super super cheap for the carriers for the time being, so when they do roll out LTE and WIMAX, the data rates should go way down...the idea from what I hear is to base everything off data...calls, everything. And it is feasible because of the unlimited potential of the spectrum that carries 4G. So...just wait a few years, their are big things coming. (Side note - tmason, are you the same tmason from xda? Just curious.)
