View Full Version : Palm Pixi--too may cards open error message
What a PITA---so I open my phone this morning and I get this message "too many cards open--yada yada" and my phone is basically locked up to useless till I find a solution. After looking through the useless 200 page user guide---and finding NOTHING about this error message, I go on line and get all sorts of BS about the OS system, what, how, who, etc. Try and find out how to get out of this mess and all I can do is call PALM support. I do that and as expected, I get someone with an accent that I can barely understand. He tells me my memory is full----my phone has 8GB yet shows 7.1 still available. THen support tells me that often times applications use more then they show---what applications, I haven't yet downloaded even one and only turned on the data link one time for 3 minutes. SO FOR THOSE WHO ARE PROUD OF THEIR PALM PIXI SMART PHONE AND WANT TO BRAG AT CAPABILITY---LET ME JUST SAY I AM ABOUT READY TO TOSS MINE!!
THE FIX IS TO DO A REFRESH, RE START, RE BOOT-----YOU TURN YOUR PHONE OFF AND THEY DO A TURN ON AND SUPPOSELY THAT FIXES SOMETHING! SOUND LIKE A SOFTWARE PROBLEM BEING CIRCUMVENTED BY A HARDWARE ACTION WHICH IS NEVER GOOD OR PERMANENT!

See my post in the other thread. My Pixi and the Pixi of my S/O do not have this problem. Never have. Are you running the most recent version of WebOS for the phone (1.4.5.1)? Heck, I've even been tinkering with mine, messing with the kernal, etc, without any problem at all...

Your 8 gig. is "storage" not "memory". I've set up 4 of these for family members, only 1 has that issue and it has a quick easy fix. I think that it's a fantastic phone and OS for the money. Stop yelling at it and it may behave better?

I'm generally REALLY happy if the solution to a problem is to reboot as that is always about the first thing I try! I have also downloaded Reboot Scheduler, which is a Preware app, that will do an automatic daily reboot. You pick the time. Kitty recommends regular reboots on phones to avoid squirrely behavior. Since I never remembered to actually do this, finding an app for it has solved the problem.

Thanks for posting that Merlin! I just downloaded it off Preware :)

All you have to do to get rid of this message is to close down some applications that are open. You do this by swiping the open applications (these are called cards) upward and off the screen. That's it.

Thanks for this info. I just got the same error message, but I had no cards on the "desktop" or applications open. The reboot did the job and fixed it.
Can the cards be hidden somewhere or is this just a weird glitch?

I think its good to reboot the Pixi from time to time anyway. These phones are like mini-computers, its good to clear its memory once in awhile. This happens to me about twice a month, I just restart and it goes away!

Unless you're a programmer, it's hard to understand what is going on. But it is a reliability bug that plagues almost all computer operating systems. As soon as I see that "too many cards" message, I head for the Restart button as soon as I can.

Updated my home router to wireless today and gave my Pixi Plus its' first web workout. The only things active on my phone that I know of were the wifi connection and the browser. After a bit of surfing darned if that "too many cards" didn't rear its' ugly head.
I rebooted the phone and then had it update itself. Hope that makes it happy.

I updated my pixi as soon as I got it, and I've not had a problem with that since.

Wow. Just browsing and you got "too many cards"? Not nice. Hope the update helps.
For me, I suspect apps running in the background cause most of the card problems, especially email and twitter. My twitter app doesn't make contact sometimes and "errors out". If you're a programmer, lights should flash in your head when that happens. Memory leak!

Hah, I'm hard pressed to program my alarm clock. As to memory leak, wifey says that's a daily occurrence. :D

Guess I just lead a charmed life. My Pixi Plus works like a champ. Although I probably should, I never reboot the thing -- it just goes on the charger at night. I've tortured it by adding Preware and the custom UberKernal, and overclocked it via Govnah, etc. -- nothing but good.
YYMV, I guess...

True that. I've done the same as you, BGilomen, with my pixi, and have been lucky as well. Works great.

Ditto although I did add the preware patch that reboots it daily.

I have had this issue before, even with no cards open. A reboot always solves the issue.
I never thought of downloading a reboot scheduler, but will do that on our 4 pixis.

I get this error occasionally. If the phone is not responsive to trying to get to Device Info and doing a restart from there, try this: hold the power button for about 10 seconds, see if the power menu comes up. If that doesn't work, initiate a hard reset: hold power button down WHILE you toggle the "ring/vibrate" code back and forth 5 times. That sends a hard reset signal. No need to remove battery cover and battery.
