By a telephone company, that is :p. Place a "freeze order" or ask for "anti-slamming" protection to be placed on your home phone account.
We didn't ... and wish we had. We've lived in the same house for more than 10 years, and have home voice and DSL service with a large telecom.
Early yesterday I found there was no dial tone on our home phone so I called the phone company. The automated system said there were no outages in our area, but they had a work order out for our number ... very odd cause I didn't initiate it. Once I was able to get through to a representative they checked and found that our number had been disconnected and ported out!! Well that sure was (rotten) news to me!
Lucky for us we are able to get our number back. The phone company says it'll take 7 business days to reestablish service. They aren't willing or able to divulge exactly how this happened but they do say we will have no charges as a result of this incident. Reminiscent of credit card fraud???
We've called our credit card companies and will contact the credit bureaus, too. Maybe someone can learn from my mistake: call and get that freeze order today!!
